The Cunard line’s Carinthia was sailing serenely to pre-Beatles Liverpool, from Manhattan. Launched in 1955, the red- and black-funnelled ship was now a stalwart of the line, carrying both passengers and cargo.
Generally, it handled a Liverpool-Canada route. This time as noted it did a year-end sail to Liverpool from New York. The ship is shown below (courtesy Kalmar County Museum, used pursuant to Public Domain Mark 1.0 ):
