The recent protests in Cuba are desperate. People do not have sufficient food to eat nor medicine to remain well. Despite the country’s famous and widely lauded healthcare system, COVID has run rampant. While the American embargo of Cuba is partly to blame for the dire economic and humanitarian situation, government mismanagement, corruption and austerity play more significant roles . After all, Cuba has faced the embargo for over 60 years while Miguel-Diaz Canel has been president for only two.
The grievances of the protestors are genuine and need to be listened to. It was concerning then that Young Labour made a statement with no mention of the protests and instead heaped praise upon the same authoritarian Castro regime that is responsible for the humanitarian crisis in Cuba right now. They naively or, more likely, disingenuously shifted the entirety of the blame for the crisis on to the American “imperialist campaign” against Cuba and called for solidarity with the “Cuban revolution”.
