We’ve made it up to North Idaho, some 60 miles south of the Canadian border in my small hometown of Sandpoint.

I could easily join other recent commentators like Ben Stein and wax poetic about this wonderful place in the world. Of course there’s a giant, pristine lake, beautiful forests and mountains, and a town full of friendly, relaxed people.  And we’re just enough north of the main I-90 corridor that it still feels a little undiscovered, although that feeling is fading fast as more and more national media plaster the breathtaking mountain scenery on their magazines and websites.

But what has made me weak at the knees this visit is yet another bumper crop of wild berries. Especially the $40-a-gallon purple gold of huckleberries covering the mountains at lower elevations right now, and the insane abundance of fresh blueberries at local farms.
