VisAbility is a non-profit association that was set up in November 2014. Comprised of members with and without disabilities, it aims to break with stigmatization and to empower people with disabilities to become equal actors in society and to find voices that are heard. VisAbility calls for respect, tolerance and understanding for people with disabilities within all levels of society and government. VisAbility presents an innovative approach to tackling stigmatization and disempowerment: it combines Art, or rather Mixed-Abled Dance as a tool to change perceptions in the community, and Human Rights Education. Furthermore, the unique composition of the team of VisAbility – composed by members with and without disabilities – offers a different way to approach people on the ground.
VisAbility launched its current project ‘Performing Empowerment’ over the summer (June – August 2017) to promote inclusion of people with disabilities in Sri Lanka by putting emphasis on their real abilities and added value for society. The second phase of the project will be executed at the end of December 2017 until January 2018.
