That just about sums-up what the Alexander Technique (AT) is about. AT is a method for co-ordinating body and mind (your whole self) in a way that protects you from the stresses of modern living.

AT is named after its Tasmanian developer, Frederick Mathias (FM) Alexander. "Use of the self" is the title of one of his most influential books. His picture is shown top-left.

Most of us hold-on to ourselves in inappropriate ways: "pulling down" is how FM described it. We use too much tension as we go about our day-to day affairs. We don't even realise we are doing it! We develop bad habits that become so ingrained that we lose touch with what is "natural". Our feelings tell us we are OK but they are not to be trusted! FM called this "unreliable sensory appreciation".
