There is a profound difference between communication and engagement . Communication is all about sending out messages to individuals, customers, clients, other businesses and the like. Engagement is about bringing people into the conversation.
Most businesses have a communications function - one or more people who are tasked with sending messages out, most often in the form of an email or newsletter. A proportion of those create this messaging as part of a broader communications strategy or plan.
But very few have an engagement strategy. An approach to ensuring that a relationship is being developed. A plan to ensure on-going interaction.
