The news tells us that on Monday, in many communities, people were out urging our President, Governors and local leaders to lift stay at home orders. Some want everything lifted, others only a partial lifting. There seem to be a variety of reasons for their wanting of this. For some, they simply want to get out and about. Others want to go back to work. Of these, some need the income and others simply want to reconnect with their colleagues at work and a work life out of the house.
What I often hear is an expression that infection isn’t real in their life. Yes it’s real in the world and in places like NYC but in their communities/counties it doesn’t seem to be very prevalent. Again and again, I hear people say, “but I don’t know anyone” who has COVID-19 and I wonder, why is this so?
It’s true that in some counties there are few if any recorded infections. And the reliance on tests to tell us how many have this disease is one of the factors shaping our awareness of the boundaries of the disease, but I wonder is it the only measure we need to attend to? Does it obscure more than it reveals?
