I like the idea of always saving your ambition for the next race. It takes the pressure off this race, which generally means you'll do better; it keeps you training for the next race, which is how you get better; it also keeps you humble in your training, which is how you feel better.
The penalty for undertraining is a bad race. The penalty for overtraining is NO race. Keep that in mind when you feel your achilles twang on the third-to-last repeat and wonder whether or not you should stop. Go slow. Do less. Sleep more. Race well.
The first step in any training endeavor is to pick a race and set a goal, otherwise you're just jogging. There's nothing wrong with jogging, it's just not training. Training is suffering and sacrifice with a purpose. The fun part, though, is that you don't have to train for a marathon (you don't have to train for anything). You can train for whatever you want.
