This historic gem was once the centre of life and commerce in the valley until Citrusdal was developed around 1920, and is one of the few authentic farm villages in the country. Modderfontein has twenty historic structures, the oldest being the large walled cattle kraal and the first house (the Smithy), built in 1725.
