when i heard that black dogs linger in shelters long after other dogs, often never to be adopted, i was shocked. they’re just as sweet, just as smart, just as deserving of a good home.
the problem is so serious, in fact, it has a name: black dog syndrome. and the bigger or older the black dog, the slimmer are his chances. some think the problem is that black dogs are hard to photograph and don’t show well on online adoption sites. some say their dark color makes them difficult to see in dimly lit shelters. and others believe that people mistakenly think that black dogs just aren’t friendly.
well, anyone who has ever loved a black dog will surely tell you otherwise. and i’m one of them. it all started with a prince named bowie. lita and winchell came next, followed by a sweet and loyal soul named bingo and now a wisp of a black dog named willhe.
