According to recent experiments, social media can be mentally draining and cause people to be more influenced by high numbers of likes on posts. In three online studies, participants were asked to evaluate ads for meal prep, ice cream, and coffee beans.
The control group was given no introductory task, while the others were asked to memorize digits or scroll through Instagram for 30 seconds before viewing the ad. Those who had just scrolled social media for 30 seconds were the most likely to want to buy the product when there were lots of likes or comments. Furthermore, they reported using the most mental effort to assess the ad. Participants who used Instagram first often gave nonsensical answers for why they wanted to buy the product.
