Neighborhoods change and can go through many lives; eventually some become only memories. What Remains? is set in the Shueijiaoshe Cultural Park in Tainan, Taiwan. This park has a rich history that includes — beginning with the Japanese colonial era — being a military village that provided a vibrant home and community for 1,100 families. With this site-specific photo and video installation, we hope to evoke a resonance of the past and to look at the near future of this area. Through interviews with former residents and others, we decided to focus on one building — now called Building C — and the life that it held: a small shop for children from the school across the street, a garden, a home for a family.
We are using the outside of the building to poetically examine and honor what was and what remains. Because we see Building C as a shell of its former life, we were inspired to have people who are passing through the park to experience the building from the outside only, by looking at photographs installed on the building, and peeking through windows into the space.
