We should be informed and have some understanding of the issues which caused this regrettable split in the Church more than 1000 years ago. Understanding our history makes it less likely that we will repeat it. A quick summary is available at Britannica , and a much more detailed one with lots of links at Wikipedia .
It is interesting that the Protestant Reformation of 500 years ago was geographically limited to Western Europe and had no impact on the Orthodox Church.
