Brother and sister, Jim St ewart and Estelle Ax ton started in 1957 with the Satellite record label initially issuing country based rock 'n' roll songs. After a few false starts, they finally made it with Rufus Thomas and his daughter Carla and this set the new style of the company. After the national success of 'Last Night' by The Mar-Keys they were forced into a name change and Stax Records was born.
