The funds provided by the Simpson Smith family continue to support the important education of young surgeons in West London today.

Alex Simpson Smith was born in 1900 in Honley near Huddersfield. He underwent several surgeries for burns in his right hand, which did not interfere in his pursuit of a surgical career despite the challenges this presented to his dexterity.

Alex was educated at Worksop college and received an offer to read mathematics at Selwyn College Cambridge, however he changed his studies to medicine, completing his medical studies at Guy’s Hospital in October 1922. Alex went on to work at Guy’s for another two years, before receiving research grants at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and the Research Farm of the Royal College of Surgeons.
