On a trip last fall to Lac La Martre in Canada’s Northwest Territories, my son Christian and I cast flies to prespawn lake trout cruising shallow bays. Depths ranged from eight to 12 feet deep and the bottom was littered with scattered rock and sparse cabbage beds.
The fish responded best to a fairly fast strip-pause presentation, presenting flies a few inches to a few feet off the bottom. We used a Rio WF10I line designed for pike and muskie fishing for the shallowest areas and weed beds, and switched to a Scientific Anglers 350-grain Streamer Express line for probing deeper water.
