The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. It is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in the United States and Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) . The San Diego / Southwestern Section provides services to the San Diego and Imperial Counties of California.

Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Training and credentialing may be required to participate fully in ARES activities. Please inquire at the local level for specific informaton. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio service, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership.
