Description: The Sag Harbor Fire Department is one of the oldest chartered fire departments in New York State. It was considered a civic duty and an honorable distinction to belong to the fire company. Robert Fordham and Benjamin Huntting were the among the first fire captains - two good old Eastern Long Island names. The Fordhams were mariners and inn keepers, the Hunttings were engaged in maritime industry: ship building and sending out cargo carrier and whaling vessels.

On May 13th, 2021 around 4pm the Sag Harbor Fire Department responded to a reported gas leak. Upon arrival it was discovered that a natural gas main was struck by a hydraulic drill and caught on fire. Members created a water curtain to protect the house which was only a short distance away and used another hose line to keep the power equipment hydraulic and gas tanks cool.
