The Saar is a special river. Although it is only 235 kilometers long, it has two sources and two names: It flows through two European countries and partly forms the border between them. And it flows through two German states.

The Saar rises at the Donon, a mountain in the Vosges (France). The two headwaters are called Sarre Rouge and Sarre Blanc in French, and Rote Saar and Weiße Saar in German. For 121 kilometers it is the French river La Sarre, then for eleven kilometers it marks the border between France and Germany.

For 68 kilometers, the Saar flows through the federal state of Saarland. Here the river forms two loops: the Great Saar Loop near Mettlach and the Small Saar Loop in the municipality of Taben-Roth. Finally, the river flows 31 kilometers through the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate before it flows into the Moselle near Konz.
