As shown through the destruction of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, many of Southern California’s older buildings remain vulnerable to seismic activity. In response to this great risk, the cities of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Burbank have passed legislation requiring many of the older apartment buildings to be “retrofitted” for earthquake safety.
Seismic retrofitting is the strengthening of an existing building to help resist the lateral forces caused by an earthquake. Buildings built before 1978 in Southern California with “tuck-under” parking are typically subject to potential collapse.
