This year, Riechers Tire and Auto is proud to be celebrating over 83 years of successful business. It all began in October 1939, when Fred and Anna Riechers opened Riechers Service Station in South Point on Hwy. 100, just east of Washington. Tires were patched for 25¢, and all the work was done outside, even the oil changes. Gas prices were between 12¢ and 15¢ per gallon, and you could buy a bottle of soda for 5¢.
After World War II, Fred’s son Roy became involved in the operation. There was not enough business for both of them to make a living, so Roy started a fuel, oil and gasoline tank wagon business. In 1947, Roy and Verna bought the station when Fred retired. In 1962, Roy built an automatic car wash across the street which was one of the first in the metro area.
Roy’s son Gary worked at the station during high school and also during the summers when he was in college. Roy retired in 1977 and then Gary and Marilyn purchased the business. In 1985, they bought Ken Holtmeyer’s station at 1000 East Fifth Street and in 1987 the business at South Point was closed.
