Description: The City Archives & Special Collections is the official repository of the records of the Municipal Government of the City of New Orleans. The Archives were originally established in 1773 by the Spanish Government. The mandate to collect city records is included in the 1954 Home Rule Charter, under which current City Government operates. In addition, the City Archives & Special Collections also preserves collections important to understanding the history of the City and how it has impacted local government.
