Montana Youth Take on State in Climate Trial TL/DR: "What it’ll make clear, hopefully, is that governments have a constitutional obligation to protect their citizens – especially the youth, the most vulnerable citizens – from the dangers of climate change," said Attorney Nate Bellinger, who is representing the 16 young plaintiffs.
A first-of-its-kind climate trial kicks off in Montana today where 16 young people have accused federal officials of supporting fossil fuels , like coal and natural gas, that violate the state's 1972 Constitutional rights of providing a "clean and healthful environment." The plaintiffs — aged between 5 and 22 — hope the case will set an important precedent and push lawmakers to take greater action to protect citizens affected by climate change .
