The water was coming precariously close to the top of the dam at the millpond on Granite Lake. Anticipating the storm, the dam gate was fully open. As an added precaution, one layer of boards had been removed from the spillway to allow even more water to flow through. The dam opening consists of a metal plate operated by a crank wheel that opens and closes the dam gate. There is also a spillway above the dam gate to allow excess water to overflow. The first idea was a pole saw to cut the boards, which did not work under the rushing water. Next, metal rods were used to wedge and break the boards open. That didn’t work, so Troy Tucker went to his shop and fashioned a huge grappling hook ,which was dropped down by Butch Roeder, with Troy to grab the boards, allowing Victor Pepin’s tractor to pull two more layers out. The water is now receding.Phew!
