South Island, New Zealand — There are those who love to jet off to Mexico during the North American winter. Maybe we like a challenge but, having been deprived of the loveliness of New Zealand for the past few years, Mr. GetNance and I opted to fly to what we like to call the “Deep South.”
The flight to Auckland is actually quite humane as they depart LAX late in the evening and arrive 12 hours later the next morning. One slightly cramped sleep and you’re there. We like to hop directly down to Queenstown because small, hospitable airports are so much nicer than large hubs.
On this trip, our first stop was Mt. Michael Lodge , set on a vineyard outside of Cromwell, a short drive from QT. It’s run by a lovely couple named Fiona and Alistair and the perfect place to get your New Zealand feet about you.
