Since Major Mitchell explored the area and the property was originally established in 1842, Mount William has been witness to an array of interesting pioneering stories. It birthed and stabled the decorated mare, Alice Hawthorn, who ran a match race against New South Wales’ fastest horse, Veno, providing the genesis for the Melbourne Cup. It houses one of the largest woolsheds in Victoria, which at its peak, sheared over one hundred thousand sheep through its twenty four stands.
Guests without a family invitation are welcome for the first time since settlement. There is the option of a luxury stay in the homestead or guests can unwind in the boutique Shearers Quarters.
