Morgenster on her mooring in Oxfordshire
Morgenster is a 54′ Dutch ‘langedijker’ barge built in 1913 in Alkmaar. Originally called Koophandel V , she was one of five distinctive barges commissioned by the Visser company and built by the Prinsen boatyard to transport cabbages through the narrow channels between the arable fields of Northern Holland. Of the five originally built, she is believed to be the last still floating.
In the 1960s she was rebuilt as a recreational barge and the handsome top was added. Her hull was over-plated in 2000, and in the last two years her interior has been completely renovated – a project which is now nearing completion.
