‘The Loneliest Time’ , looks at the effects of conflict from a very different angle. Many of us will be aware of P.T.S.D , (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Identified shortly after the Second World War but not entirely accepted as a disorder until post the Vietnam war. Post traumatic stress disorder (P.T.S.D) is a mental disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, or other threats on a person's life.
The long-term medical consequence of P.T.S.D among male veterans who served in the Vietnam War was that they were almost twice as likely to die in the quarter of a century between the two key studies than those who did not have P.T.S.D. It was also found that those suffering from it were more likely to die of chronic conditions such as cancer, nervous system disorders, and musculoskeletal problems. Decompression following missions used to be a very much inclusive role of being a member of the armed forces. With cuts to budget over the last 20 years, these elements were the first to go. Today it is left in the main, to these serving men and women to figure out ways to manage the issues associated with conflict, some achieve this and some do not.
