Almost every blog I used to read had a blogroll – I’m talking about 10-15 years ago when people were still actually blogging – and that’s where you often found new blogs to read. Peter Frampton was all over FM radio in Jackson, MS. Bicentennial events were everywhere. Swine flu was coming to kill us all. And I was riding herd on a bunch of 13- and 14-year-old kids for the city of Jackson. This photo was taken at the old Riverside Park (now Lefleurs Bluff State Park), and these were the teenagers on my summer crew for the Jackson parks department through funding from the Youth Conservation Corps. We worked cleaning up and repairing city parks, and some places I didn’t know were parks. We found a motorcycle in a ditch at the back of a park one day. Another day I nearly incinerated myself trying to set a burn for some brush in another park. This beat-up old panel truck was our summer transportation. No A/C, no radio (so no Peter Frampton, thank God), no seats in the back, rear doors that would sometimes fly open – it could be an exciting ride. Somehow it kept running all summer.
