Ōtanewainuku Kiwi Trust is a community-based conservation trust that was established in 2002 by Te Puke Forest and Bird and local community following the growing concern of the declining North Island brown kiwi in the pristine Ōtanewainuku Forest.

Located 20km south of Tauranga, the virgin, unlogged Ōtanewainuku forest is home to thriving native birds and wildlife. Magnificent rimu trees are a common characteristic of the forest, along with over 300 indigenous plant species.

A pest management programme ensures benefits for all vegetation and animals of the forest, including the kōkako.
