In contrast to almost everywhere else in the country this year, it has been a near-perfect summer here in Interior Alaska. Bright, sunny days. Just enough rainfall. Almost no smoke from wildfires. So I have to wonder, "Why have I been painting snow for the last six weeks?" My three new paintings, each quite different in approach, have one thing in common--my preoccupation with winter.

Cloths of Heaven is a large (4 ft. x 5 ft.) canvas, done all in oil pastels. This is a crazy thing to do, which I suspected when I began, but I couldn't help myself. I love working with oil pastels, but they are made for working on paper, and it's aggravating, at best, to deal with framing and shipping very large works on paper, so I thought it was worth trying on a large, stretched canvas.
