Joan has lived in Sudbury since 1974. Her artistic endeavors began in 2002 following an early retirement from education. She is mainly a self-taught artist. She has traveled to 6 continents and to more than 70 countries. This has influenced her art in many ways. However, she does find most of her inspiration in the local northern landscape.
Joan is a very versatile artist. She pursues a somewhat representational approach when painting in oil. She also paints in watercolour, pastel and acrylic, and creates abstracts using mixed media. Joan especially takes pleasure in using veils of colour to create vibrating light in her paintings. She has attended portrait and figure drawing sessions; she paints ‘plein air’ whenever possible; and she does some soapstone carving. This award-winning artist has had paintings accepted into many juried shows in the area as well as in the Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery in Vancouver. She has also been in several solo shows, dual shows and group shows in Sudbury. She is a member of the Sudbury Art Club, the Northern Ontario Art Association, and has Active status in the Federation of Canadian Artists.
