From 1775 to 1779, Joseph Hodgkins served as a captain in the Ipswich Company under the command of Col. Nathaniel Wade, and maintained a mail correspondence with his young wife Sarah, sharing news from the Battle of Bunker Hill to Cambridge, Rhode Island, Long Island, Pennsylvania, and Valley Forge. Sarah’s letters brought word from home with frequent reminders that she wished he would return.

One hundred and six of Joseph and Sarah’s letters survived and are stored in the Phillips Library Repository at the Peabody Essex Museum. In 1958, the letters were compiled as written in “ This Glorious Cause ” by Herbert T. Wade and Robert A. Lively, providing a unique firsthand record of the Revolutionary War. In 2022, Gordon Harris transcribed the letters from their original spelling into readable English to create the attached document.
