Iowa has a proud history in the Civil War. Iowa regiments fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. Many were on the March to the Sea and the March through the Carolinas. Others served west of the Mississippi in Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Shortly after the War and continuing to the present, monuments or memorials have been erected to commemorate the service of Civil War Veterans. We have identified over 400 monuments in Iowa.
