Originally designed for military use, the AM General-built Hummer was released to the civilian market in 1992 due to demand. In 1999, General Motors bought marketing rights to the Hummer name and called it the Hummer H1. GM also began marketing the Hummer H2 that was assembled by AM General on a modified GMC chassis. The Alpha is special, and is a re-engineered H1 using GM’s 6.6L/300 HP Duramax Turbo Diesel and 5-speed Allison automatic overdrive transmission. Production ran from early 2005 thru mid-2006, though all Alphas have the 10th VIN symbol as a 6 for 2006, and the program was canceled when GM decided to withdraw technical and financial support for engineering and recertification, ending 2006 production at 729 examples.
