Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Gabu , as well as part of the Mali Empire . Parts of this kingdom persisted until the 18th century, while a few others were under some rule by the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guinea . Upon independence, declared in 1973 and recognised in 1974, the name of its capital, Bissau , was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with Guinea (formerly French Guinea ).
