D.C. charter schools are public schools that are free to set their own school cultures and curricula and held accountable for improved student performance. Charter high school students in the District are much more likely to be accepted to college: some 83 percent were accepted to college last school year (the city-run school system does not release information about how many of their high-school students are accepted). D.C. public charter high schools have a graduation rate that is 11 percentage points
