The jigsaw puzzle has fascinated young and old since around 1760, when London born John Spilsbury first commercialised the puzzle. Jigsaws were originally made by painting a picture on wood and then cutting it into interlocking puzzle pieces using a special fine tooth saw. This special saw was called a jigsaw and this is what gave the puzzle its name. Later on cardboard was more commonly used as a backing for the pictures and the pieces were cut by precise machinery.
