Girona Airport, or its full name Girona-Costa Brava International Airport, is an airport that serves the city of Girona. It is located approximately 12.5 kilometres south west of the city and close to the village of Vilobí d'Onyar in the north east of Catalonia in Spain. The airport is used extensively for passengers travelling to the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees and is well connected to the resorts of Lloret de Mar, l'Estartit and Blanes. The airport is currently the seventeenth business airport in Spain, with 1,664,763 passengers passing through the airport in the year 2016. At its peak in 2008, the airport handled 5,507,294 passengers and 48,128 flights, and this made it the eighth busiest airport at the time, but numbers have been decreasing since then.
The early 2000's saw a massive growth at the airport after Ryanair choose Girona as one of its European Hubs. The six years between 2002 and 2008 saw a ten times growth where passenger numbers went from 550 thousand to the 5.5 million. In 2010 there was a slight decline in passenger which was caused by many factors that year. There was bad weather, the volcanic eruption in Iceland , the Air Controllers' strike in France and the walk-out of Air Traffic Controllers in Spain.
