雪のヒマラヤから、南は岬のココナッツ畑へ。 東の波打つ海岸から、西はラクダの群れる砂漠まで。 ひとつの国でありながら、まるで他国を旅しているように変化するインド。 インドの手工芸を見ると、どの地方の物？どんなふうに使っているの？ こうして私たちの旅は始まります。 作り出す形や模様は、日々の暮らしと共にある祈りや祀りごとそのものです。 村の入口、聖樹の根元には、お守りの土偶がならび、今朝の花が飾られて清々しく、各地の更紗や刺繍布、織物には、豊穣や繁栄の吉祥模様が、招福の使者となって描かれています。 手で作られた物、願いを形にした物は、愛らしく、温かく清廉で、その力強さが私たちを惹きつけます。 インドの手工芸は、広大な大地で多様な民族文化をもつ人々の、それぞれの主張とプライドのように思えます。
