Modern day coaching evolved from work done by Tim Gallwey in the 1970's. Tim watched how people were coached by tennis professionals and realized that they often improved despite their coach rather than because of the coach. He noticed that he himself improved then he was in the natural flow rather than when he was being deeply critical and analytical about his game.
Furthermore, he found that he was at his worst when the critical voice in his head was at it's loudest - "why did you do that", "you know you can't serve", "why try a drop shot, you never succeed". He called this Self 1, and the part being talked to Self 2. Self 1 is the build up of all the negative programming you have experienced during your life, and Self 2 is the real, authentic you.
