The image shown is taken from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite using the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC).  The DSCOVR satellite orbits the sun at the Lagrange Point L1. This is a stable point balanced between the gravitational field of the sun and the gravitational field of the Earth, located slightly less than 1 million miles towards the sun from the Earth.  The camera points continually at the sunlit side of the Earth
