Since 1746 there are documentary references to the Capuchos Convent dedicated to Santo António, patron saint of the religious Capuchos. The building, located in the Historic Center of Monção, features characteristics of the 16th century, particularly in its cloister, well before the Capuchos Church itself (1769). The cloister, of quadrangular plan, belonged to another Convent, the one of São Francisco, founded in 1563 by Franciscan Nuns, and abandoned in the middle of Century XVIII.

In 1748, on the initiative of the Religious of Santo Antonio, the convent building integrated and expanded the house and chapel already existing in the walled Quinta and surrounded on the Fountain of the Village which had been built by nobles in the middle of the 17th century. Even today the Hotel Convento dos Capuchos is supplied by water from an old mine that passes under the Vila's wall (1656), which suggests the construction of these buildings at an earlier date.

After nearly a century of monastic use, the Royal Decree of 1834 extinguished the religious order the Religious of Santo António of the Province of Monção. In the same year the inventory and the public auction of the filling and the Convent took place. Thus began the secular period during which the Convent, now called the Quinta dos Capuchos, belonged to the family of the Baron de S. Roque, an illustrious nobleman of the region.
