There are times when you want to take an existing picture and turn it into a 3d model. Luckily for us, Solidworks has a feature called Autotrace that lets you “trace” around the edges of shapes in a picture file. This can be useful if you are trying to reverse engineer components or if you would like to create 3d parts from 2d drawings. Previously we talked about how to model a bolt in Solidworks, but sometimes you just need a CAD model to be used in your assembly. A great resource for off the shelf components is McMaster – Carr. As a mechanical engineer, I’ve heavily used their website for all kinds of components from springs, bearings, flanges, mounts and yes, even bolts. You can sort by material, thread size, bolt type and more. It’s an incredibly valuable resource when you’re designing your assembly.
