Colombian Young Amber – Caribbean Amber
The Aztec word “copal” (Nahuatl: copalli) refers to all tree resins -of any age- that have been employed as amber incense over the centuries. Consequently, from this etymological point of view, it turns most ambers, also the ‘famous’ Baltic or the almost equally old Dominican amber, into Copal, because they are used for incense even today.
Nevertheless, copal still makes a better incense, as it still contains liquids such as oils acids and alcohol. These produce the distinct resin smell. In older amber these volatile liquids have dissipated because the older it gets, the more it undergoes a process known as polymerization. In Copal -depending on the age- only part polymerization has taken place.
