While I don’t have a specific focus within technology, I’ve made a handful of investments in HR tech and code-free startups as I understand those spaces better than others.
For me, technology means software. I’ve invested in a few companies that also use hardware but never a hardware-exclusive company. I’m not sure I would add much, if any, value. (Same for life sciences and medical device companies - every idea sounds great and I have zero insight into how I could be helpful.)
10-20% of the time, I will venture outside of those guidelines because of the founder. YMMV but the main reasons are a) adjusted for age, the founder is smarter than I am and b) she has a unique insight into the market that is also a competitive advantage.
