Many of the towns and cities within the greater Hunter region owe their foundations and their economies to the coal industry. From the first discovery of coal in Newcastle in 1797, it has shaped the growth of our landscape as it has shaped our communities.
This exciting project was made possible by a grant from the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund. It celebrates and commemorates the lives of the people of the coal mining communities in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, and shows the close links between the people and the places in which they lived and worked.
