Checkmat was founded by Leo Viera, a 6th Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Romero ‘Jacare’ Cavalcanti. Leo is one of the Top BJJ Competitors of all time & is famous for combining one of the most entertaining play styles in BJJ with an amazing track record. In addition to winning ADCC, IBJJF Worlds, & IBJJF Pans, he has become one of grappling’s most important coaches by developing athletes such as Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida, Lucas Leite, Karen Antunes, Patti Fontes, Abraão Amorim, & more.
Here at Freedom Jiu Jitsu we are blessed to be part of Checkmat, under Leo Viera, by way of 5th Degree Black Belt Professor Paulo ‘Mushu’ Elsimaani.
