While protesting the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City in 1968, The New York Radical Women snuck inside the venue, dropping a banner that read LIBERATION from the balcony. No one has ever seen an evidential photograph; it lives only through retelling. I've imagined it many times.

Almost a decade later, Women Against Rape (W.A.R.), a radical feminist group launched in the UK, staged a series of protests during which they carried a giant sign, spelling out the name of their organization that also doubled as a mission statement. There are a handful of accounts of women encountering the oversize banner for the first time, or holding it up themselves, but only one photograph remains, and the object itself has long since disappeared.
