Ammonites lived prolifically in shallow seas from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods until they joined the dinosaurs in the Cretacious-Paleogene extinction approximately 65 million years ago. Although found as stunning fossils throughout the world, only ammonites found in Southern Alberta, Canada, and northern Montana were fossilized under the near-perfect conditions required to yield gem-grade ammonites.
